Castelnou

Castelnou

Castelnou is situated 6 kilometres from La Fauvelle, and is a medieval village built from stone. Castelnou has been voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. The castle overlooking the village has been restored several times and, along with the rest of the village, dates back to the 12th century. Castelnou also has small galleries, a market on Tuesdays, as well as a couple of restaurants.

Collioure

Collioure

Collioure’s history goes back to Greek Antiquity and traces remain of two castles from the 17th and 18th century, as well as a 13th century royal castle. The village also has a proud art history, and was the summer resident of artists such as Matisse and Derain, the so-called Fauvists.

Cathar Castles

The Cathars challenged the Catholic Chuch in the Early Middle Ages, with their simplistic lifestyle and became one of the primary targets of the Knight Templars and The Inquisition. Today, the ruins of the old Cathar castles stands as proud extensions of the mountain peaks in the area, with a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape.

The Dalí museum in Figueres is not just a museum, even though it contains some of the artist’s most important works. Dalí dedicated 13 years of his life to the realisation of the museum, which is experienced as an incarnation of the artist himself. The museum’s aim is to deprive visitors of their passivity. A truly surreal experience!

Carcassonne appears on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, abd is the best preserved example of a medieval fortified town in France. Old Carcasonne is surrounded by massive walls and moats. In the evening it is a wonderful sight, floodlit against the background of the night sky. During the day, there is a bustling street life created by the many visiting tourists.
